A tranquil haven off the coast of Wales, Skomer Island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The island is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, including puffins, guillemots, and seals. The landscape is characterized by rugged cliffs, hidden coves, and rolling hills, with wildflowers blooming in every color of the rainbow. As the largest island in the Pembrokeshire Islands, Skomer Island offers a unique and unspoiled environment, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and simply soaking up the natural beauty of the area.
What a place. From the moment you step on the boat to go to Skomer it just feels magical. Jim the skipper on the boat is so informative and funny. His little mate Tonto the gull comes along for the ride. When you get to Skomer it's a steep walk up lots of steps to get to the information area where you're met by one of the volunteers who talks through the do's and don'ts, what to look for and you can purchase water and binoculars (PS5-take cash). Skomer island is a beautiful place and there is so much wildlife ( plants, birds, bunnies, seals and if you're lucky dolphins and porpoises). We visited later in the season once the puffins had left but there is still plenty to see and because there was only one boat trip that day, a lot less people were on the island, (at times you didn't see a soul! ) There are volunteers around the island who are friendly and will have a chat with you about what they do on Skomer. We got to see some seals and their pups really close up via a telescopic lens which was fantastic. It's definitely worth a visit to a very special place.
This island visit is an absolute must when venturing around Pembrokeshire. An ecological conservation project working optimally, so Puffin and other species numbers are now flourishing and on the rise. *Important* you need to book this island tour in advance via the main skomer island website in order to get a ticket on the boat over. And once on the island you are kindly asked to maintain on the walking paths in order not to accidentally crush the nesting bird holes which lie shallow under the surface of the soil. The island has no wheelchair access and has gentle hilly paths around it with one central toilet based in the old farm of the island. Would highly recommend suncream and plenty of water on a clear sunny day as there is next to no shelter. The island can take 2-3hours brisk walking around paths to see everything or a casual 4 hours (includes seeing all the sites too). Most likely not ideal for kids unless they can walk a lot. The island has a great mixture of flora and fauna and, of course, the main attraction for most a good variety of wildlife. Puffins, seals, gulls, insects etc. Don't forget your packed lunch and walking shoes! It's a fantastic day trip! Well worth the money!
I thought my husband forgot about my birthday these year , but I couldn't be more wrong. Got lovely weekend in Wales including boat trip to Skomer Island After several years of chasing Puffins around Scotland I finnaly end up in Puffin Lovers Heaven , my dream absolutely come true. We could be so close to them . I'm glad we choose to walk around the island first then go to Puffins colony because probably we would end up spending all day in one place. The island is truly amazing all the colors bluebells and other flowers looks like a beautiful carpets from the distance. If someone loves nature like us will definitely love it. Everything was well organised boats been on time, all the stuff and volunteers been super friendly.
Very peaceful and amazing place to visit. A must visit if you're in Wales. Be ready to walk as it is a long walk around the island - about 4 miles to see the whole island. A few spots on the hike which are quite muddy so please wear good hiking boots. Lots of puffins and rabbits. We were fortunate to see a few seals in the distance. The bluebell fields were also so beautiful. There is a small picnic area but you have to take your own food, no food is sold on the island. All in all, an amazing place to visit and well worth the price paid.
Lovely Island. Good organisation. Shame there're no puffins in August, and the only moment you're warned about it after checkout. Wildlife is limited to Seagulls, rabbits and ravens. The rest of species are super rare, so it's basically yet another Britain's coast. Also shame the shop merch is limited in sizes. The most popular size M is missing. C'mon, order more :) Still, it's a beautiful place, good facilities. Happy that my money go to research of the island. Jim on the boat
This is a paradise! Wonderful nature, amazing view, and, above all, thousands of cute puffins. Certainly worth visiting! Advance booking for the boat trip is necessary. Special thanks to ladies and gentlemen in the visitor centre and on boats, they do a great job with love for nature.
