Slough Fort is a 19th-century fortification built to protect the Thames River and the surrounding area from naval attacks. The fort is constructed from brick and features a distinctive star-shaped design, with bastion forts at each point. It was originally equipped with 13 guns and was garrisoned by a team of soldiers. Today, the fort is a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade II listed building, and it is open to the public for guided tours.
The fort may be a little out of the way but it is well worth a visit. A dedicated group of volunteers are steadily restoring the structures and happily share their knowledge with you. Plenty to see with the site covering the 1800's up till the second world war.
There is not a lot to see, but still enough to find out about a small part of the history of this place. Slough Fort is a Victorian Artillery Fort overlooking the Thames Estuary. This mid-19th century, Fort in Allhallows Kent was built to tackle the rise of French Ironclad Ships and guard a vulnerable stretch of the river Thames.
As a Trustee I am biased but the work carried out on the Fort is done purely by volunteers, some live locally in Allhallows, others come from a bit further : Essex, surrounding Kent areas. All the Trustees are volunteers, which makes us quite unique. Lovely area, views across the Thames/North Sea/Medway. Friendly group of people with different skills to apply.
It requires lots of care... important piece of history in world wars.. quick visit and start early for tour because it happens once on Sunday...
Brilliant to see the progress of the restoration, on our open day we had a great guided tour which gave us a lovely insight into the history of the site. As this was a special day there were displayed of historical items form the period and first and second world war weaponry and memorobilia. Would highly recommend a visit, particularly on one of the open days where there a extra things to see and do.
It looks rather interesting. The staff is really nice and dedicated. Unfortunately my kids refused to have 90 min tour and we were not allowed to quickly look around. I'd like to know more about the history of this place. Perhaps another day. Please check their website for guided tour times, otherwise the gate is closed.
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Good for kids
