Sluggan Bridge is a historic stone arch bridge spanning the River Lagan in County Down, Northern Ireland. Built in 1854, it features a single arch with a span of 30 feet and a height of 20 feet above the river. The bridge's rustic charm and picturesque surroundings make it a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
A short easy walk from the gate noted in my pictures, you'll come across a bridge that looks ancient in design but is only about 200 years old. A lovely place for a picnic by the river with scenic hills, stone craftsmanship accompanied by the sounds of nature.
Sluggan Bridge carries the (former) line of Wade's military road from Dunkeld to Inverness across the River Dulnain. General Wade arrived in Scotland in 1724 to begin his campaign of road & bridge building in an effort to pacify the highlands, although its construction cannot be precisely dated. The original two-arch Sluggan Bridge was washed away in 1829 to be replaced by this single-arch bridge of circa 14-ft-width and a rise of half that above flat ground on both sides. A much later road realignment left Sluggan Bridge as a crossing-point over River Dulnain for a heritage walking-route.
This is a beautiful spot. A pleasant walk through pine and silver birch to the river Dulnain. The old road is no longer used.
