A 19th-century lead mine situated in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England, featuring a preserved underground tunnel system, original machinery, and exhibits showcasing the history of lead mining in the region.
Great to visit really important local heritage very interesting and great guides. Lovey day out. Take your wellies.
A really interesting set of ruins. Some need a hike up a reasonably steep hill and again to view the chimney. Worth a visit though and you can imagine the conditions that people had to work in when you walk around the sight. The visitor's centre has always been closed when I've visited (summer).
Visit for the open day tour, the guide was extremely knowledgeable, tour was around 80 mins. You need wellies as there is quite deep water in the mine.
Found by chance, made for a good afternoon out with the kids, the volunteers are helpful, funny, and don't mind having a chat.
Snailbeach mine is free to visit, very large area with most of the buildings surviving. On the website it tells you when the volunteers are present to do tours of the mine, one short tour for PS3 & a longer deeper tour which is pre booked only . On open days the buildings are unlocked to view & watch a video, buy books etc. On non open days just walk around the site. Parking in the village with toilets on the car park.
Beautiful place and a lovely day out even in a drizzle. The parking is down the hill as well as free bathrooms and changing facility.
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Good for kids
