On the doorstep of Blenheim Palace, and within the beautiful garden of The Oxfordshire Museum, Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum is an independent military history museum featuring objects and stories from people affected by conflict - from soldiers on the Front Line to ordinary people on the Home Front. Engaging and interactive exhibits help you discover Winston Churchill's military background in the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars, the WW2 battles of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, personal accounts of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen from soldiers and camp survivors, and much more. Admission fees apply, see website for more information and offers. Adults PS6.50, Concessions PS5.50, Children PS3.50
The museum is tucked away behind The Oxfordshire Museum and Woodstock Library, and is worth visiting. There are a number of exhibits and displays featuring various periods of the regiments' histories. Some parts of the museum are interactive such as a WW1 trench and WW2 Anderson shelter and airborne glider, which would appeal to younger visitors. At the time of visiting there was a temporary exhibition, called 'Into Battle!' About British war comics. This was well presented. It would perhaps be good to see a few more artefacts on display. An interesting place to spend an hour, good value at PS6.50.
This is a great place with a lot more to see than you'd first expect. I especially like the efforts made for the experiences to be tactile. Children can dress up, pick up items etc. The exhibits are excellent quality and there is a lot of art on display too. The staff at the front desk were helpful and friendly. There's also a selection of Preloved books on sale which are very good value so look out for them
Went for a special sen session before the museum opened for the day. It was amazing, the person on the desk turned off all the sound effects so it didn't overwhelm our boys with autism. Such a great idea that allowed us to enjoy somewhere that's normally off limits. I wish more places would do this! Thank you SOFO!
I've been before but the exhibition has been updated. Very interesting and poignant as we went around the anniversary of D day. Not too busy and plenty of time to see everything. The man let us go out for lunch and return in the afternoon.
