The Museum tells the story of brick and tile making, one of the many labour-intensive industries once found in Somerset. The core of the Museum is the only traditional brick kiln remaining in the South West. It was one of six at the former Barham Brothers' Yard in East Quay, Bridgwater, and was last fired in 1965. Bridgwater produced an impressive variety of bricks, tiles, terracotta plaques and other wares that created the look of many Somerset towns. The kiln is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was saved from destruction in the 1990s. Open Tuesdays only 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
We really enjoy visiting this lovely little museum. It is not a big place, but it is packed full of information about the history of brick and tile production in Bridgwater. There are lots of lovely examples of the items that were made at that and other kilns that were in the area. The kiln itself is fascinating, it's wonderful that it's been preserved and we can now walk around it and look inside it. The museum offers many activities both for children and adults, all related to working with clay. There is a small charge for activities, but that's covers the costs of the materials they let you use. I highly recommend these activities, they are always great fun and the kids have made some lovely bits out of clay. The activities are very popular though so you must book in advance on the website. This little museum has a lot going on, so it is definitely worth visiting if you have never been before.
Lovely little museum. I had booked my 2 children aged 6 and 2 onto a tile pair king class. The 2 women running it were super friendly, informative and helpful. They both went above and beyond to help my children and chatting to them and helping them with hand washing, putting aprons on and showing them the different activities. Really reasonably priced for the activities too. We have attended an Easter one so this was our second visit and did not disappoint. Will definitely be returning!
It's so lovely to have this little bit of history still standing. I urge you to visit! It's run by social services and the volunteers there are the sweetest. Great kids activity days.

Wonderful small museum set in the industrial estate. An important place that tells the story of building materials that have shaped the surrounding architecture. We have all been effected by the work and design that this museum to the industry shares. Small but sweet.
