The Southern Washlands are a unique and fascinating landscape of coastal wetlands, salt marshes, and mudflats along the Wash estuary in eastern England. This area is a haven for wildlife, with thousands of migratory birds visiting each year, including pink-footed geese, brent geese, and wigeon. The Washlands are also home to a variety of other wildlife, such as seals, otters, and fish species. The terrain is characterized by its constantly shifting shape, with the tides and winds continually reshaping the mudflats and salt marshes. Visitors can explore the area through a network of footpaths, cycle routes, and birdwatching hides, taking in the ever-changing scenery and spotting the diverse range of wildlife that calls the Washlands home.
Great place for a walk. There are different routes depending on how far you want to walk. Some walks take you down paths into woodland and beside open water, and others are along the canal.
There is a circular walk here, about a mile in length I think. The ground is fairly solid (if you wanted to take a buggy / pram), and there is a car park (although it appears to be currently closed while being refurbished. There's not as many areas to see the water as you would perhaps expect but there is a view point for the Hydro.
We have been around this area a few times now to walk the dogs but the first time at this location. There is a nice walk down to the canal and a pub to visit at the end. There are lots of boats moored up along the canal and plenty of room to sit outside the pub
This is a great place, just outside the centre. The main thing I love about this area, apart from the location and great natural vista is the fact that you can make the walk as short or long as you wish. There are so many variants using all the interconnected loops it's great on foot or bike. My only concern is too many people get to hear about it and it gets over used... Maybe a "Washlands Trust" could be started so more people can enjoy it, and it can be naturally maintained for all to enjoy. I would suggest all to go and enjoy the nature on your doorstep... responsibly.
Lovely place to walk, plenty of parking, nicely sign posted throughout.
