19th-century chemical industry hub, now a scenic, riverside park with paths & a visitor center.
Nice relaxing place, needs renovation ,nice wildfowl swans ,ducks ,geese
Lovely place to visit, for walkers, families, dog walkers, and anyone who likes wildlife or a good view. There is a small cafe on site at the boat house. Nearby is The Catalyst Museum, with another cafe and a play area outside, which is popular with families. After the closure of Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, the canal is currently being kept full of water by a team of volunteers, the boat owners, who are doing a fantastic job. If you visit, don't forget to make a voluntary donation in the bucket at the boat house cafe to help with the upkeep of the water pump run by the boat team.
Lovely area for a revitalising walk. There are many ducks and swans in the water which are quite friendly and can be fed by purchasing some food from the Catalyst shop. There is a play park for children to enjoy and a little zip line. This is also a great area to walk the dogs while enjoying the scenery. I would recommend going for a nice relaxing walk here.
Spike Island is a beautiful short walk around what is a historical location for the area. There are lovely wooded and fielded areas to sit and enjoy the day, you can watch the river Mersey passing under the Mersey gateway bridge or the boats on the canal. If boats are what your interested in the boat club on the bank of the canal is open to new members, with a food shop open to the public. Or if more historical boats are your thing, just on the far side of the island (at low tide) you will be able to see the shells of several flat boats that used to sail up and down the Mersey carrying supplies. With a play area, an all weather football pitch for kids and also the Catalyst museum situated off the car park, this is really the perfect place for all.
A great place for a walk alongside the Mersey
I have been coming to spike island since I was very young and have recently started using here for running. I always love coming and being in the large open space, the views of the mersey gateway bridge and the jubilee bridge are great and i think the cafe has been a great addition in recent years. There are always lots of dog walkers and people exploring with their children and using the park area. It is somewhere i/we will visit again and again.
