Early 12th-century castle with a working youth hostel in its gatehouse & courtyard with free access.
It's a real castle built around the year 1200, so it's cool to see that. There is a nice view as it's on a hill. There are steep right roads to get up there and there is nothing to do apart from look at it. There is a student hostel there which is cool.
Popped in on the way past. Not been since school residential in 1997!! Lovely to go back with my daughter who also went on residential 9 years ago.
Imagine how cool it is staying in a 100 year old castle for the night. Excellent, inexpensive, and friendly place to stay if someone doesn't mind community sharing concept. Staff are extraordinary and helpful, especially Katty. Thank you for your outstanding customer service. We really enjoyed our stay.
Filled with the sound of children playing today and therefore Castle closed. Pleasant walk around the moat as always. Currently undergoing repairs to the walls so fenced off in part. Historically interesting. Not a whole lot to see but a nice place to stop for awhile. There is a church opposite the castle entrance. Photogenic. Lots of picnic benches and seating. Free entry. Youth Hostel.
English heritage castle now converted to a yha. The hostel manager was happy to let me explore and take pictures around the interior but the exterior is free to explore as well. Great use of old heritage sites to preserve them and continue their use
Now a Youth Hostel although often also open to visitors. Not the biggest of castle, but impressive gatehouse. Lovely setting.
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
