This historic chapel is dedicated to Saint Columba, a 6th-century Irish monk who played a crucial role in introducing Christianity to Scotland. The chapel features stunning stained-glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and a serene atmosphere.
This is a simple to find place and has no people control so it's free. The car park is alongside on a very quiet road. You'll get to see three things: The two caves of St Columba, his supposed footprints in a rock and the well he used for fresh water. There were also five sheep and a LOT of their poop everywhere on the steps up to the well and on the path from gate to the caves (only about 30 yards!) so watch where you're putting your feet. It's a lovely coastal view with a few seabirds scattered among them. You might get lucky and sea a seal or two at certain times of the year.
This place gets 5 stars not for the Columba's Footprints but location as a whole. I wouldn't travel here for the Columba's attraction. It's literally just a couple of footprints in a stone and a couple of caves. Massively underwhelming. However, the location itself is beautiful! Lovely views, nice sandy beaches and even a beautiful costal road to drive on the way down. Best of all, we got to see Seals sitting the rocks opposite the cemetery. Parking is free and easy and there is a public toilet on the beach at the other end. Overall, a good day out.
I only passed by that area. The surroundings are beautiful. Great place to spend a day out. Not far from it there is a spot for resting sea lions. I saw around 30 of them sunbathing on the rocks. Also a very beautiful white sand beach is nearby as well
Please note the 2 stars is strictly for the footprints. It's not even worth the 115 m from the car park. Skip it and walk to the well which is at least a 3/5 or just enjoy the landscape which is as others have stated 5/5. Sadly we didn't see seals but we saw an otter which made this stop worth it. The beach next to the car park is also very nice.
Sad is that just footprints are left but at least something! Beautiful views around from the past chapel's hill and ancient well, worth to visit 3 local caves. Bless be with you!
Very interesting stop. Good car park off a stretch of road by the sea shore....look out for seals on the rocks too!
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
