St Leonard's Tower is a 15th-century tower located in West Malling, Kent, England. The tower is all that remains of the medieval church of St Leonard, which was demolished in 1648. The tower stands at 60 feet tall and features a distinctive octagonal shape with a tapering design. It is constructed from local ragstone and is adorned with stone carvings, including gargoyles and other decorative features. The tower is surrounded by a small churchyard and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from its top. It is a Grade I listed building and is considered a significant example of medieval architecture in England.
I'm not disparaging the tower by only giving it two stars. It's just that it's a very small site with not much to see or do. However the tower is sturdy and impressive. Around the back, where the tower doorway is, I met a local who was very surprised to encounter another visitor there. They alerted me to two highlights I would otherwise have missed - peering through the keyhole of the door to glimpse a view of the interior, and a "memory box", stashed in undergrowth to the left of the door, where visitors leave, take and exchange mementos of their visit. Combined with a visit to Manor Park Country Park accross the road, which you can use to get to and from West Malling station, it makes a very pleasant afternoon out.
Not much to see and tmright now can't get close to it due to a fence. Probably due to renovation. It's accessible via west malling train station
Unfortunately it's not possible to enter the tower without permission. Nowhere to park on site and no facilities. Still a nice quiet spot. You'll only need 30 mins max to see it.
Very nice little ruin of a tower,if you want to go in you have to ring the parish and they meet you with a key. No proper parking. Sandwich and read a book type of thing, nice though.
Not that much to explore but still a nice historical location in a beautiful area.
If it's been wet, wear wellies! Steep slope to entrance which is round back. Not suitable for wheelchairs. Parking was filled when I was there by 2 cars occupying all the space. I would be surprised if the bay holds more than 3 at most. Interesting walk to the side of the tower.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
