A historic holy well and ancient pilgrimage site, St Rumbold's Well is a tranquil oasis surrounded by lush greenery and featuring a natural spring, stone-built wellhouse, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Fascinating site of Local History and Heritage. Sad it is being used by yobs. Have visited the place a few times and cleaned it up. Hope there is someone local who will take it upon themselves to make it a site worth preserving. The photo here is after I spent 2 hours cleaning the place , lifting all the stones pushed down into the well, removing all the spent bonfires, huge amounts of broken glass etc. and carrying 3 bags of litter down to the entrance of the park.
Hidden out of the way off the Railway Walk this is a small part of Buckingham's history related to the 6th century child saint. Site is a bit overgrown and there is rubbish inside the fences.
Given the significance of the Saint to the town's history it was disappointing to see this site is a poor state of care. It just doesn't feel cared for and is a forgotten relic tucked in a field with houses been built all around it. Full of litter the stonework for the well has long crumbled. The gated compound still features painted symbols depicting the Saint and the towns coat of arms. The fenced railings appear more interesting than the well itself. The well is now dry but the spring from which no doubt the original well thrived has moved 50 or so metres down the hill and flows through the access gate, creating a muddy and slippery access path.
Not a great deal to see really, but worth a pat on the back for finding it.
