They have a shiny black carapace, with a distinctive mandible that resembles a stag's antlers, hence their name. The males' oversized mandibles are used for fighting and display purposes, while the females have smaller mandibles. Stag beetles are nocturnal and are attracted to tree sap, sweet liquids, and fermented substances. They are found in woodlands, parks, and gardens, particularly in areas with mature trees. Despite their size, stag beetles are harmless to humans and play an important ecological role in breaking down decaying wood.
