Eclectic local heritage museum with thousands of photographs, paintings, prints and objects relating to the village of Staithes and the surrounding area. Explore the local history of fishing, mining, lifeboat stories, the railway, maritime voyages and the life of Captain Cook. Dry Dogs are welcome.
I liked browsing through this tiny well loved museum! I was fascinated with the lobster pot man and enjoyed the film of him making them. There were lots of interesting artefacts to see.The volunteers were friendly and helpful.
Delightful museum, absolutely packed full of maritime artifacts, model boats photographs, signs & ephemera. Much to discover, not only regarding history of local fishing but also little know industrial past. Very helpful staff & on the ground floor, several excellent shops. Added to that free admission, well worth a visit to any holidaymakers interested in the areas history.
Excellent in the museum, plenty to see and it's free! Great volunteers explaining the artefacts on display and a diverse range of subjects from Captain Cook, the old Staithes railway and its demise, Staithes bonnets, local historical photos and lots of lovely items for sale in the shop.
Excellent local museum, one of the best. Our third visit with different friends, all find something that appeals. Met yet another well informed volunteer guide. Will probably go again!
Great free little museum, with really helpful staff/volunteers. There was a lovely lady who gave the kids a little fact hunt and got them engaged.
Well worth a look, especially on a rainy day (and God knows we have had enough of those this Summer). Picked up a couple of things in the small craft concessions downstairs before spending a good 40mins in the upstairs museum. To be honest, skimmed the Captain Cook parts but enjoyed the Laura Knight/Staithes Artists section, plus the fishing heritage and railway artefacts. Useful to visit after walking around the village as clearly street/house names have not changed much in 200 years.
