Set in the heart of the beautiful Pennine hills, Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre is at the highest point on the UK canal network. Taking 17 years to build, Standedge Tunnel is the Longest, Highest and Deepest canal tunnel in the UK. Spend some time around our lush green landscapes and find out how life is better by water. Hop on board one of our Discovery Boat Rides into the tunnel, Head on up to our nature reserve and reconnect with the great outdoors, or spend a moment in our coffee house and unwind. Our warehouse building is currently closed until March 2023 whilst we await the arrival of some new spectacular tenants who cant wait to showcase the musical history of Marsden and beyond!
On this occasion I just made a rather quick visit to see The Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre in Marsden. However, as you can see from my photos, this attraction I feel requires a more thorough visit as it looks really interesting! :) I particularly enjoyed the lovely countryside setting and the canal / water / actual tunnel itself. I will hopefully return in the future to further enjoy this really immersive attraction, as I really love Canal Industrial history etc. Thanks. :)
My mum and I visited yesterday. We had lunch and a trip through the tunnel on a boat ride. All the staff we encountered were fantastic. Knowledgeable, funny and helpful. A little gem that is worth a visit.
We had a great afternoon at Standedge Tunnel. First we took a barge ride into the tunnel (wrap up warm it's chilly in there). The guide was really knowledgeable explaining the history of the tunnel and making it fun for the younger ones. Afterwards we enjoyed coffee and cake from the lovely little cafe then went round the museum where there were activities to do. There is a park to entertain the kids and a fantastic walk for everyone to enjoy
2nd visit here with grandchildren they loved it . Lovely walk along the canal from Marsden Station. The guides were very knowledgeable and got my grandson to join in the demonstrations. The cafe is fab too x
A wonderful place to come and explore and learn about the history of the tunnel. The visitors centre provides some interesting information as well as a film being played. There's also a playground with plenty of benches, and also toilets. It's dog friendly too!
May 2024 We had a lovely walk down to the canal to the tunnel. On a whim I pre booked our tickets for the tunnel tour. It was fantastic, Dave our guide was welcoming, funny and extremely interesting. The whole family enjoyed listening to what he had to offer. The trip lasted around 30 minutes, combined with the walk and the coffee shop we spent around 2 hours there. The national trust office had walks with maps, of different lengths and difficulties if you wanted to spend more time exploring. Overall, interesting history in a stunning location. The guides were superb from the canal trust, worth every penny of the PS30 for a family ticket. Loved it!
