A small memorial dedicated to the airmen who served at Steeple Morden Aerodrome during World War II, featuring a bronze plaque mounted on a wooden backboard with a propeller and wings emblem, surrounded by a small garden with a few benches.
A surprise find of this great memorial to some even greater men. A never forgotten generation. Saw the props just poking above the wall as I cycled by from the west...otherwise I would have missed it. Next time I pass I will bring a small trowel and take out some more of the grass shoots that are growing out of the steps. Pulled as many as I could up by hand. Perhaps others could do the same.
A bleak and wild place..windswept and bare!. The memorial though is impressive and well kept. A good place to be alone with your thoughts of those left behind .
Situated in the middle of nowhere is a magnificent war memorial dedicated to the USAAF from WW11. Formally a bustling aerodrome, it now sits empty with a map of how it was originally. Well worth a visit.
A great looking tribute to the Squadrons who operated from here and to the men who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Steeple Morden Aerodrome Memorial is absolutely Awesome!. It is exceptionally done; very informative; a tremendous tribute to all personnell who were involved in this aerodrome during WWII. This is a historic memorial on a historic aerodrome site. This Memorial was dedicated on Tuesday 12th May 1981. My personal score is 10/10 & I award Steeple Morden Aerodrome Memorial my Gold Star for Excellence.
One has to take a heart's step back when first encountering the 355th Fighter Group Memorial just up from the village of Steeple Morden. You try to imagine the distinctive roar of the D-Model's Rolls Royce Merlin engines as you look at the incredible sacrifice of so many engraved in its face. Lt Col John H. Bonner, USAF-Ret; son of !Lt John Bonner, Jr; 358 FS
