Re-live the glorious days of the steam railway at Stephenson Steam Railway in North Shields. George and Robert Stephenson spent 20 years in North Tyneside developing their pioneering ideas which helped spread railways and locomotives around the world. Today our museum celebrates their achievement. A range of fascinating locomotives are on display including George Stephenson's 'Billy', a forerunner of the world-famous Rocket. Animated film and displays explore how trains work and the impact on peoples' lives of coal and electricity, crucial in the development of railway power. On scheduled days, visitors can take a ride on a 1950s passenger train pulled by steam or heritage diesel locomotives.
Booked on the train kids had a great time. Museum is free and lots of friendly staff, also boys enjoyed colouring in. Spend around an hour there.
Loved it! Very nostalgic. The museum surprised me with full size engines and carriages inside the building, so no matter what the weather there's lots to see.
A great little heritage railway, the volunteers onsite are brilliant in general. But during the festive events they really make it a fantastic place to visit
First Photographic night at the Stephenson Railway. Good night was had by all and the staff were very accommodating. I'll be back for another night
Absolute paradise of railway history. You can see the oldest steam engine of Britain .this is maintained by passionate people who volunteered themselves to reserve this heritage .Absolute quality time can be spent. Pets are not allowed with museum but they can have train ride. If you are fortunate then you can ride steam engine, otherwise replete yourself with diesel engine train ride. You will get feel of 1860...rest room and ample parking space available. They do have event on Christmas so just call them to know the exact date. If you love my comment please don't forget to like it...
Impressive place if you want to see what's left of the steam age. However I recommend that you book a major event day as they will most likely have more engines running. When I went it was rainy and despite the fact only one train was running. I had an enjoyable experience and got some good photos. The train ride is about 40 minutes there and back with 10 minutes between departures to allow to locomotive to shunt into place or to refill its water tank.
