Stratfield Saye House is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Wellington. As a lived in family home the house and grounds are only open to the public for a limited number of days each year, usually over Easter and August. Please see our website for more details.
Fantastic home, great tour guides, lovely place to visit if you like history. The current Duke of Wellington and his family live there now, but was built by the first and very famous, Duke who won at Waterloo, among many other battles. There is a strict rule of no mobiles and no photography indoors. Must reserve ahead via their website, and entrance if free if you are a Historic Houses member. Free parking, about ten minute walk to the house, passing by the loos and cafe as you come off the parking lot. A great visit. Limited access to the house for wheelchair users (ie, going upstairs), please check in advance. Do not miss the stables and funeral car exhibition.
This isn't open that often so you do need to book ahead. The guides were excellent...knowledgeable and friendly. It's great that the house is lived in and as such feels like a home rather than a stuffy place. Don't miss walking 5 minutes to see the grave of Wellington's horse Copenhagen as well as the impressive funeral carriage in an adjacent building. Cafe does a nice filter coffee and cake too.
Booked a tour for Easter Sunday, ancestral home of The Duke of Wellington, which the family still in today,Mike and Carolyn walked us round the rooms in the house,a tour which lasted over 90 minutes and was very informative. The house and grounds are only open for short periods during the year.
Interesting historic house with superb tours. Need to book in advance. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. It was a fascinating visit, that we've recommend to our friends. Entrance is only via the tours, which are only available as shown on the website. Well worth a visit
We checked before heading on if dogs were allowed and there is no information about it on website. We only wanted to see walled garden. We were told while buying tickets that: DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED. No signs anywhere or no relevant info on website. Disappointing but managed to get in as drove so far and argued the case...Metal gates not opening to the garden due to age. When asked why they are not kept open for visitors (only 3 weeks in a year) we were told there are rabbits on the grounds and they ruin the plants...Walled garden has great potential and beautiful set up but not much interest at this time of the year...Only good service in the cafe made it better but come on, get some coffee machine!
Best known as being the home of the first Duke of Wellington of Waterloo fame, this makes for a fantastic visit! Still owned by the current Duke of Wellington, this is still a family home so you will see lots of little hints of the family there! For the general public, you have to book in advance and tours do sell out as they are only open at limited times and months. They will email you over a PDF with driving instructions- please follow these to the letter! There are so many turnings and Google Maps takes you to a different entrance! Once you're parked, check in at the Visitor Centre with toilets, a cafe and a small shop and theyll explain where to meet. In the stables, there's a small exhibition on the Duke with some artifacts including his funeral carriage which is very ornate and shows you the high esteem he was held by his contemporaries. The tour covers the main rooms and offers some wonderful artwork and really great stories about not only the most famous Duke but also later ones too. Our two guides were great and very passionate. You're able to visit the grounds too and see Copenhagen's grave under a wonderfully sprawling oak.
