Sutton Valence Castle is a medieval fortified manor house located in Sutton Valence, Kent, England. The castle dates back to the 12th century and features a mix of architectural styles, including Norman, Gothic, and Tudor elements. The castle's structure consists of a central keep surrounded by a curtain wall, with four towers at each corner. The walls are constructed from local ragstone and are adorned with battlements and machicolations. The castle's interior features ornate stone carvings, wooden paneling, and grand fireplaces. Although it has undergone several restorations, Sutton Valence Castle still maintains much of its original medieval charm.
It's only a small site and the only visible remains of what was once a larger complex. Parking is minimal in the village. There is a place on Tumblers Hill about a 5 minute walk but again that has limited spaces. A couple of information boards and more history on the website. Somewhere to stop off on the way to somewhere else. Plenty of steps too
Very nice and it was free to enter. We where lucky there was an event but without an event it is also interesting to go into the towers and learn about the castle
Free, steep flight of steps from the road to the ruins, which are thankfully short. Car parking very limited.
Dramatically situated ruins with a great vantage point overlooking the surrounding countryside. A short walk from the village up the steps to the castle takes in a couple of information boards outlining its history. The village itself is very attractive and worth a look around while you're visiting. Narrow roads and not much parking around so a good idea to visit away from peak times.
What a pretty little village once you get away from the noisy trunk road that runs through it. Very spectacular views especially up by the castle ruin.
A really lovely surprise. It was a much needed, fresh walk out; great views and an ideal surrounding location to take in. Such a lot of history in Sutton Valence! Really would recommend and certainly would go back.
