The Swaledale Museum is a small, volunteer-run museum located in Reeth, near Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. The museum showcases the history and heritage of Swaledale, a beautiful and remote valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The museum's exhibits include displays on the valley's geology, archaeology, and natural history, as well as its industrial and social past, including lead mining, farming, and village life. The museum also features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and artworks that reflect the valley's unique character and charm.
A great museum in a small space. It covers the geology and history of the land, with photos and pieces bringing the history alive. Artifacts from the mining and farming communities. There's pieces on some of the old families from the Dale too. Staff really friendly and helpful. They make the visit.
Paid PS5 each to read some boards in a room basically. Didn't think it was worth paying for. We expected a lot more. Been to much better places with voluntary contributions and fab volunteer tour guides.
This is one of our favorite museums anywhere. First of all, it's very comfortable. It occupies two floors in an interesting building. Secondly, they have such easy to understand displays that teach you about the long and fascinating history of Swaledale. From the stone age through lead mining, they cover it all. Plenty of artifacts and photos give a nice personal touch. Helen Clifford is a gem and is very knowledgeable and helpful. Do not leave Reeth without spending some time here.
A lovely, welcoming little museum on the site of an old school. A must for getting an insight into the prehistory and industrial heritage of the area. Run and funded entirely by volunteers so worth supporting.
Hidden Gem A little out of the way but well worth the effort (Head over to the post office there is a sign outside one of the entrances). The Museum is small but packed with loads of local information and full items on display. On the day of our visit the Lady that was there (It's Volunteer run), was so welcoming. Plants were for sale in the small garden.
This is a small but interesting museum. It consisted of one room crammed with mainly mining and other local industrial memorabilia. On the plus side it is dog friendly but we thought it was overpriced for what it is. It took us about 30 minutes to visit.
