Tain & District Museum is an independent, volunteer-run museum in the North of Scotland.
The museum was small but packed with interesring memorabilia and information. The burial grounds and the old church were magnificent! Many thanks to Jason for sharing his knowledge and enthusiastic attitude!
We enjoyed our visit, the staff were warm and welcoming and knowledgeable about their local area's history. We were able to park right outside the building and enjoyed the several buildings that have so many interesting artifacts on display. The memorials inside Collegiate Church are fascinating but the most poignant was the booklet made up of photographs of those young men that were lost during WW1 that were depicted on the roll of the dead memorial. Unusual Hogsback Stones in the cemetery, first time I had seen them in person.
My husband and I had the most magical experience here. I am part of Clan Ross on my maternal grandmother's side, and knew when I made it over to Scotland from the states that I absolutely had to check this place out. My husband and I were walking around very unassumingly just taking in all the rich history in this beautiful space, when Jason came up to us, looked right at me and said "are you a Ross?" That question was the absolute turning point of our visit. He took as ALL over the museum and graveyard sharing with us amazing fact nuggets about the past. I shared with him what I knew of my ancestors and he was even able to tell me a bit about what life would have been like for my family during that time period. Jason went above and beyond to make our experience like something out of a fairytale and I cannot recommend this place (or Jason) enough!!
Fascinating museum with displays and archives recording the history of Tain and the Clan Ross. Particularly highlights Tains importance as a place of pilgrimage for the Stuart kings of Scotland.
Nice little museum and visitor centre. Friendly, knowledgeable staff to answer any questions. Worth a visit to learn the history of Tain
