The Museum was opened by a group of aviation enthusiasts in 1982 to promote public awareness of the United Kingdom's military aviation heritage, to educate present and future generations in military aviation and to serve as a memorial to airmen and airwomen who gave their lives in the service of this country. Since that time it has been managed and run mainly by volunteers and in 2017 was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. Now one of the UK's leading aviation museums, it is home to an impressive display of historic aircraft and has a unique collection of aviation memorabilia stretching from the First World War through to the Cold War. Amongst the many attractions, there are numerous interactive displays and aircraft cockpits
A physically compact but content packed museum that has a lot of opportunities to experience various exhibits. Both the adults and children in our party enjoyed the museum, especially the cockpits that are available to sit in (with staff assistance) as well as a jump seat and a couple of flight simulators. The staff are numerous and extremely helpful and informative. The aircraft are very well kept and the displays are excellent. Well worth a half day visit, especially on a damp day.
What a great place. So much work and effort has gone into this. We loved it. Husband had a go in the flight simulator for a small donation. So informative. The volunteers who run this place have so much love and passion for it! A great day out. Thoroughly enjoyed it
I first visited many years ago and am very impressed with how it has developed and grown. So interesting and a great museum. I highly recommend making the effort to visit and whilst there trying a cooked breakfast in the Cockpit Cafe. Really tasty and good value too. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff.
Dropped in by accident due to bad Friday traffic. Pleasantly surprised. Good range of exhibits both WWII and more modern. Liked how we could eat our packed lunch on the picnic tables even though they have a cafe.
Loved it! Fantastic amount of information, lots of interactive activities for young kids (7&9). Much more than I expected, great little cafe with lovely coffee. Volunteers are so knowledgeable and friendly and made us feel welcome, ended up staying around 3 hours great value for money. We will be returning
Very nice to look around and see all the history and amazing pieces of aviation technology. The only negative was that the lady at the reception was very sceptical that my grandfather was an RAF veteran and was rather dismissive of him.
