A majestic neoclassical building in London, the Atheneum is a prestigious private club founded in 1824, boasting a stunning facade with a grand Corinthian portico, ornate stucco work, and a sweeping staircase leading to its elegant entrance.
The Anthenaeum, presides over King Street in Stirling, built in 1816, was originally used as a library and then eventually underwent remodeling and saw some additions made. The curved facade sweeps behind a centrally-placed tall square tower, which comprises five storeys, a belfry and spire. An entrance porch was added at the base of this tower in 1859, surmounted by a statue of William Wallace (1274 - 1305). The building has served as municipal offices since 1875
Originally a library the Atheneum sits at the top of King street and is now used as offices for the local council, the most striking element of course is the addition of the statue of William Wallace above the front porch
This grade A historic building formerly a gentlemans club and library has a great view over the hill and looking down King streets cobbles and the victorian stirling arcade entrance to the thistle shopping centre and it's numerous shops. The land which the Steeple is built upon was previously the location of the Stirling 'Maill* Mercatt' and was gifted to Stirling Burgh Council by way of a royal charter by King Charles I in 1642. The building and the construction thereof was paid for and undertaken by Duncan Watson and upon completion, was thereafter gifted to the Burgh Council on 'Witsonday' 1682. * 'Maill' is an old Scottish term meaning rental payments Completed in 1817 by William Stirling and features the famous William Wallace statue (aka Braveheart)
