This 19th-century farmstead turned heritage center showcases rural life in Fife, with restored buildings, exhibits, and demonstrations of traditional skills like woodworking and weaving.
Great walk to see the Striding Arches. The first can be seen by walking a short distance up a track just before car park. You have to walk all the way round the building to see it, and inside. To see the other take the forest track up to summit of Cairnhead. There you get a great view of the other two across the hills. An option is to take track to Benbrack which would change it to a 9 mile walk instead of six. Heads up about getting there. It's a 7 mile single track road with passing places also lot of potholes. For the last couple of miles this turns into a rough dirt track so great care must be taken. The car park has plenty space and there is an information board.
The road into The Byre is truly shocking, i would highly recommend if you don't drive an ATV not to go! You risk damaging your vehicle. We travelled a considerable distance from home to enjoy a great days walking, only to be deterred by the condition of the road. Not making it to our destined parking place. Wether forestry harvesting traffic or windfarm plant machinery has destroyed the road i don't know? But surely it needs addressing, 7.5 miles of craters need repairs urgently. Tourism brings in good money, the only benefactor here will be garages repairing damaged wheels, tyres, suspension etc... Andy Goldsworthys artwork adorning such beautiful landscape deserves to be seen.. Rant over...
The long long narrow road full of massive potholes from Moniaive to the Byre make it quite a trek. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to get there on a warmer summer day. We walked from the Byre up to Colt hill arch.
So worth the visit. Really poignant and beautiful.
Great walk in the sunshine not much their but awesome stone arch
one of the best walks I've ever had, saw the arches and loved it
