The Cockney Museum showcases the history and culture of the East End of London, celebrating the Cockney rhyming slang, traditional music halls, and the iconic Pearly Kings and Queens.
A great place to visit. Not massive but well laid out and good exhibits. Was well worth going and seeing what it was like when my family lived in Shoreditch. Some people had absolutely nothing and nowhere to live. My mother was born within the sound of Bow Bells. They moved when the war started to the countryside. You can tell George, former Pearly King of Peckham loves the museum and he is full of knowledge. Lots of photographs around also of famous people he met or knew. There is a nice little shop in the museum with something for everyone. We found it very easy to park using Just Park who we have used before. We then ambled past the shops back to the car. There were 4 of us and we were all glad we went and will probably go back sometime soon and be reminded of how much more we have today compared to then. Who knows what the future holds!
Well, once you find it the adventure begins. You only pay to get out not in. Run by Pearly King of Peckham. Lots of historical stuff. If you want to find out more just take the time to chat with George, it was his dream to make this memory 70 years ago and is what he lives for.
This is place is an amazing find!!!! My partner and I live locally and we're looking for something to do over lunchtime. After a short query on Google we came across this museum and WOW! Were were greeted by George who is more than a pleasant fellow. But someone who has lived a life which seems so interesting that as he gave his guided tour we were instantly hypnotised and thrown back in time to 1800's Whitechapel London. I would say to anyone. DO VISIT this museum. It's amazing. George himself is the type of person you could spent hours with. Also he is still to this day shown on a massive poster in Heathrow welcoming people to Heathrow in his Pearly suit!
George has excelled in making this museum a trip down memory lane. So much to look at its worth a few visits to appreciate everything. You could definitely see George's passion for keeping the cockney history and pearly Kings and Queens tradition alive. Great little shop too. Definitely worth a visit. Would 100 percent recommend.
A fascinating museum, that keeps cockney life, well and truly alive. It's good for older children and teens as it's a very visual museum. Be prepared to spend several hours there. The lives of working children in Victorian times was so sad, yet compelling and well told. The Victorian street and market place are very atmospheric. We also met George who founded the museum. He was very welcoming and was also friends with Norman Wisdom!
Great little museum. We were greeted by George, the Pearly King of Peckham himself at the beginning and he talked us through all of the exhibits. We were then left to explore and go through at our own pace. We were met at the end and George happily answered all of our questions. All in all we had a great time. Well worth a visit and George is a true gent. A big thank you to the Pearly King!
