The Drake Stone is a 12-foot-tall, 40-ton granite monument situated on Dartmoor, Devon, England. This ancient stone is believed to have been erected during the Bronze Age, around 2000-1500 BCE. The stone's surface features a series of intricate carvings, including concentric circles, a grid pattern, and several cup marks. The Drake Stone is one of the largest and most impressive ancient monuments in the UK, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding moorland.
Was a bit windy on Saturday the 8 June, when we went up to have a look at a stone on top of a hill. It didn't put me off have a climb to the top of Drake's stone though, even the fact that I thought the wind was going to send me to the ground below the hill Drake stone sits on never mind the earth under the Stone. I even laid down on the top to get out of the blowing relentless wind. Don't be put off by this experience,as that only half the story. The views are amazing, the feeling of getting up there and it being on top of the world made it worth while. Even had the company of a few climbers who had popped up there for an afternoon,to have a climbing session. So want to go back and do a bit more walking in that area.
Very nice walk , but very wet & muddy . Great views on a clear day.
Lovely walk up from the village and a nice place to sit and take in the great views
Absolutely marvellous ! Not a long distance from the car parks; Harbottle castle and Forestry commission both have one, but a taxing uphill climb. Well worth it as a 360 panorama from the top with views of Harbottle lake is breathtakingly beautiful !! NB You can go round the right side of the hill, as though visiting the lake, and then a gentler incline gets you to the top !
A lovely hike upto the Drake Stone on a red hot summers day in Harbottle.
Really enjoyed this place! Fab rock formations! Gorgeous lake just beyond too which we swam in... the woodland had a lot of trees down due to storms but we managed to make our way through okay
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
