Open daily 28 March to 3 November 2024, 9.30am to 4.30pm (and until 5pm in June, July and August). The Great Laxey Wheel (Queeyl Vooar Laksey) is the largest surviving working wheel of its kind in the world. Designed by the Victorian engineer, Robert Casement, the wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from the 'Great Laxey Mines' industrial complex. The impressive 22m (72.6 feet) diameter structure found immediate popularity and has remained one of the Island's most dramatic tourist attractions for almost 170 years.
Obviously one of the great attractions in the Isle of Man, some parts of the wheel's mechanism are undergoing extensive restoration but the wheel itself is open and you are able to climb to the top. On a good day the view up the valley and down over Laxey is stunning and the site is a fairly short walk from the Manx Electric Railway stop. If you have time the second wheel Lady Evelyn has also been restored. Near the village centre it is smaller, less famous but worth a visit.
The great attraction of Laxey - superb view's from the top - but beware - the steps up are steep and quite small and not for everybody. If your a member of the national trust, take your card with you for the discount. ! As with all attractions in the Isle of man -children under 16 are free ! Nice cafe close by to recover from the exhersions?!
Fantastic place the views from the top of the Laxey wheel were great the hole Laxey trail is well worth seeing
The Lady Isobella, she doesn`t disappoint. IOM and Laxey`s flagship attraction is upon closer inspection an engineering masterpiece of its day. The setting is not bad too !
Certainly worth a visit while you're in the area. An amazing structure and so good to see that it is being maintained.
PS15 entry for adults - interesting walk around and feat of engineering. You get to view a tiny section of the mine but it definitely gives you the feeling of what the miners would have worked in
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
