Galleries on Chester's local history and Cheshire's natural history, plus temporary exhibitions.
On a first visit in July 2024, with my family. Wow, what an amazing place. Well, it's worth a visit if you are in the area. Firstly, this is free, with a recommended donation. There is so much information and exhibits crammed into every available space. There is something for everyone. Historical people, building of the area with Roman encampments, etc... lots of art and reconstructions of period housing. There are lots of stairs, and for some sections, there is a lift available for folks with reduced mobility. This will give you access to the upper ground floor and down into the visitor shop and cafe out at the back of the building. It is possible that you may encounter real Roman soldiers on parade...well, school children dressed up on their field trips. A few seats dotted around to take the weight off. A very informative video at the start and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I surprised myself how long I stayed as it was so interesting.
I went here for the roman history part of the museum. It's quite a small place, but has two rooms dedicated to it; including a short video. There's a room of engraved stones; which you have to press a button for a light to come on at the back. It's also the first time that I saw a roman safe, with a key.
A varied museum with a good collection of Roman artefacts, silverware, natural history. There is also a model house to show how interiors changed through the ages, as well as a changing exhibition that it sometimes contemporary, about local history or traditional. It is free to visit and has a cafe and shop.
Made a day trip to Chester during our recent vacation in Scotland & paid a visit to The Grosvenor Museum. The whole place is quite old but there are quite a bit of vintage things to see, love some of the oil paintings as well as some vintage equipments eg TV, sound system & office equipment people that were used before technology advanced so quickly! Entrance is FOC but all visitors are welcome to make a donation which we did.
Beautiful place and must visit. Best thing is it is FREE.. 3 pound donation is worth every penny. It has a 2 floor display of antiques with detail history in it. It has a free toilet too.
I like this museum very much. Sadly, the painters section was closed during my visit. This museum has got a great collection of pictures worth efforts and time to see them. I have witnessed great education action where school classes actively enjoyed learning the historical backgrounds of Chester. Place no fee entry. Donations are welcome and recommended. Nearby carpark. Buy tickets for all day and follow walk around city wals. Enjoy and feel Chester. Chester, it's a great place to visit.
