The Helena Thompson is both a museum and a community venue serving the town of Workington and the surrounding area. The museum, which is accredited by the Arts Council, reflects the area's history, industry, culture and social life through displays, interactive audio and visual information units and digital information. More than just a museum, the Helena Thompson is now home to groups with a wide variety of interests and activities and is a popular venue for wedding ceremonies, children's days, exhibitions, parties, concerts, and other events.
Fantastic visit to this venue the lovely ladys who volinteer here are amazing so welcoming . The cafe is spotless and the food is so lovely thanks to Patrica and her marviously happy Mammy . Free to get in lovely for all the family. Thank you all for your great work and hospitality.
This is a place of times gone by,by not embracing it ,but seeing it hands on what it was like.I believe this is a gold mine of information,as opposed,to children expected to just reading it in a book, you can see for yourself,by admiring the well kept artifacts, having the latest technology at your finger tips to see what it was like.see for yourself how hard it was someone to survive.note how many hours a eight year old was expected to work, how the mines must of been etc etc.besides Helena Thompson, this museum pays homage to the Curwens, who I've been told are a well known English gentry ,of very high standing. The grounds can also be used for weddings. Note the well kept gardens.workington, you have a true gem in your hands.I hope you make the best of it,and continue to support them.
Genuinely one of the most enjoyable and informative museums I've ever visited. Staff could not have been more helpful in explaining the exhibits and answering all our questions. Thoroughly recommended
A great experience. Particularly when you recognise some items from your younger days. Fantastic place for a generational visit.
A small museum with an amazing amount of interesting local exhibits. Well worth a visit. Make sure you visit the cafe for very reasonably priced freshly cooked food. Tricia and her mum are fantastic, full of enthusiasm and very welcoming.
Today, Friday 2nd June, we have had the most wonderful afternoon tea at the museum. The food was amazing, the ladies who looked after us were just so fabulous, nothing was too much trouble. A massive thank you from myself and family for making our afternoon so memorable.
