Step into the heart of Chatham's legendary ship building heritage and return to the 'Age of Sail', when the Dockyard built mighty ships that won command of the world's oceans. Test your sea legs as you peer through the periscope of a Cold War Submarine, command the bridge of a WWII Destroyer and ring the ship's bell aboard a Victorian Sloop. Delve into the award-winning Command of the Oceans interactive gallery and picture the crash of the waves as you explore the UK's largest collection of RNLI Historic Lifeboats before gaining first-hand experience of life as a Victorian ropemaker. And don't forget to check out the exciting programme of events and seasonal activities throughout the year.
Buy your tickets online or in the entrance. (Lasts you a year). Make sure you give them your car registration at the ticket counter as that will cover your parking fee. The site itself is incredibly full of history. I've included a bunch of photos but I haven't put everything up as you really need to go yourself to experience it in full. At the time of our visit we had a very important case to solve given to us by Constable Cracker and his accomplice. These little books where given to all the children that wanted to participate in solving a historical case with clues spread across the entire site ensuring that we all have had a good stroll around the entire area. The history the dockyard gives is beyond incredible. Too much information that we definitely will be going back to read up more about the history. Lots of activities for the younger generation from parks and interactive elements. Then of course a very well stocked cafe/restaurant with plenty of choice of hot and cold foods as well as climbing frames inside too. Needless to say, the exit consists of having to walk through a somewhat pricey gift shop. However I do think they could expand the gift shop a little more and have much more variety of items. Overall a fantastic day out and would highly recommend it anyday. Check online for prices and availability.
If booked online in advance, entry is PS28.50 and includes unlimited vists for one year. (Note you cannot book online for same-day entry). There are several attractions to see, so you should plan to come back another day if you want to see everything. There are a few places to buy food once you are inside, but also plentry of spots to eat your own food. I saw at least two places where you can refill your own water bottle. Unfortunately there are no lockers or secure areas where you can leave your bags.
Amazing historic place not too far from London. Got to tour some historic boats, learn about rope making, and had the specific tour about Call the Midwife. The tour was very focused on the show and how shooting scenes there happens but they also mention some of the other things filmed there.
One of my favourite days out (although it really takes more than a day). Plenty of space, good parking and excellent facilities while the exhibits themselves are superb (and often updated). Looking forward to our next visit.
Very interesting place, well worth a visit. Attended with kids age range 8 to 16 and all enjoyed it. Fascinating looking at the battle ship and touring through the submarine.
I popped along with a couple of friends who are also interested in maritime history one weekend. Plenty to see and do in one day, however the rope making only operates during the weekday only. Very nice facilities on site and free parking.
