A 17th-century coaching inn nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park, offering rustic charm and warm hospitality.
We booked a chalet here purely by chance and very last minute. It was a lovely place to stay. The bed was very comfortable and the chalet was clean, comfortable and decorated to a good standard. The owner has made great use of the space and there is also a campsite. We ate in the pub in the evening and the food was really nice. A special mention has to go to the landlady though. She made us feel very welcome, even when maybe we had a glass too much. I just hope the locals can forgive us for dragging them into the conversation!
Liked: We really liked the campsite itself, camping in the orchard was lovely, and the ground was flat and easy to pitch our tent. The staff in the pub were helpful at check in and the food we ate there at breakfast and Sunday dinner was amazing. Disliked: The shower could have been warmer, but when camping you do kind of expect this... was hard to find a dislike as we had a great time.
Liked: Nice cut grass, very little light pollution, staff in the bar friendly and helpfull Disliked: Showers where poorly maintained and no hot water, few other guests said they reported it as the gas was either turned off or ran out and haven't been sorted for days. How close some people get to you, with there epitch site, had a campervan that rocked up and pretty much nearly parked on top of our tent while we where out for dinner. Given 3 stars overall due to no hot water and the site us expensive for a tent pitch,
Liked: Lovely site. Quiet flat pitch. Liked that there were no caravans. Pub and outside bar and seating. Everything you need for a nice stay. Disliked: Toilet/shower block could do with up dating, shower was cold unfortunately. Some lighting on paths to toilet/shower block as uneven surface and very dark. Or ensure you take your torch.
Liked: Proper Gem had a great pitch with electric hookup, the pub food was excellent location is also great with loads of local sites to see, also not far from Bristol or bath. All staff and other campers very friendly and welcoming. Disliked: Toilet & shower block was abit basic but is clean. Also could do with more showers and toilet cubicles. This wasn't a real issue for me but if the toilet block was updated this would be a 10/10 campsite!
Liked: Lovely camp site, well marked pitches, toilet and shower block, and washing up area all perfectly good. The pub itself was excellent, really great food, lovely staff and a really warm welcome. Sitting by the woodburner on the sofa after our evening meal was great. The outside areas was nice too, loads of room, outdoor fire-pit as well. Disliked: Not all the toilet/shower units have locks on the doors.
