Explore the gas-lit world of the Victotrian judges, their servants and felonious guests in this totally hands-on award-winning museum. Vast courtroom and grim cells included! Be led by the voices of its past inhabitents in a fascinating audiotour, featuring the late actor Robert Hardy. Sit in the Judge's chair, read his books, even pump water for his bath! Shop selling traditional toys, Welsh border crafts, nature gifts, soaps and a wonderful range of cards. Pop-up tearooom run by volunteers with cakes baked just 100 yards away and a range of speciality teas, coffees and soft drinks from Mid Wales companies.
Fascinating ... our second visit. We arrived shortly after opening time and had the whole place to ourselves most of the time. Plenty to see. The audio tour was informative and entertaining. Well worth a visit. PS9.95 each is pretty reasonable as it gives entry for a full 12 months. Parking is available a few yards from the entrance.
Beautiful building, lots of history contained within. Takes you back to a different time. There is a court room here. You are given individual recorders that narrate the story of members of staff. Includes a wonderful below stairs set up. Has a little tea room with wonderful homemade cakes to enjoy. Volunteers are very friendly & helpful. Recommended
A truly original immersive experience. The fabulous audio guide takes you through each room at your own pace bringing everything to life with character narrations depicting how life was in the mid 1800s. Complete with the smell of oil lamps burning and the flicker of gas lighting you get the sense this living museum really is full of everything that was in situ 150 years ago. An underlying storyline of a local felon from back-in-the-day helps round off your experience of the reason this building exists. The team keeping all of this going were great. We rounded off our visit in the tea room which offers a terrific selection of leaf teas, ground coffees and delicious cake including bara brith.
This was a very interesting experience, and I am glad we did it. It was startling to experience breathing the paraffin lamp atmosphere and experiencing the flickering gas lighting downstairs. Be warned if you have breathing difficulties already!
A fantastic historical place of interest. Audio device for a guided tour is a must. Lots of interesting rooms, furniture etc to see.
Probably the best museum I've visited. Excellent free audio guide. They've tried to retain as much of the original 1860s furnishings even down to gas lighting. Must see!
