The Knapp and Papermill is a beautiful nature reserve and a circular nature trail winds its way around the reserve, taking visitors through an orchard, wildflower meadows and a woodland as well as alongside the Leigh Brook. There is a designated picnic area near the entrance (thanks for not having your picnic elsewhere) and visitors are asked to respect the wildlife and other visitors by keeping to the paths, keeping dogs on a lead at all times and keeping out of the Leigh Brook. Parking is very limited so we ask visitors to limit their visits and to return at a different time if it is busy. The nature reserve is closed on Christmas Day.
This is an excellent nature reserve. The nature trail is really lovely, exploring a range of different habitats. There is a plethora of birds, butterflies, and other creatures. The picnic area has bird feeders in the tree. I really enjoyed watching a nuthatch eating peanuts while having my lunch. There is a longer 8 mile walk with an audio tour that I would recommend downloading from the wildlife trust website beforehand as the phone signal is quite poor.
Beautiful place to go walking although some of the older photos on here in the reviews are a little miss-representative. The reserve has naturally become quite overgrown so viewing the Weir and the Bridge is next to impossible in the summer as it's completely overgrown with bramble and nettles. The later part of the loop was closed due to risk of Ash Tree (limbs) falling due to Ash Borer Beetles. The meadows and woods are absolutely lovely though and it was a nice circuit! Great little yomp!
It's OK. Not great if you have a dog as they have to be on a lead at all times. Some nice little inlets but some very narrow paths where you can hardly pass people if they're coming the other way. Especially at muddy points. Wouldn't rush back.
Wonderful place to visit , very quiet & peaceful. We saw deer for the first time here , very exciting for our 7 year old Grandson. A lot of preservation precautions put in place since we last came , looking after this wonderful place for the future .
Good circular walk starts from here - see their web sites PDF. You need GPS though and the track to follow unless you are one of those people who is good at maps and compass. Parking is outside the gates unless disabled. WC and small visitor centre... dogs must be on leads no wild swimming them and duck chasing etc. Out of season not crowded at all.
Absolutely amazing.... it was a beautiful sunny summer English day.... and the breeze was gently soothing our senses.... so so fabulous. Highly recommend this walk.
