A 13.5-foot-tall (4.1 m) Neolithic standing stone, one of the most impressive and well-preserved ancient monuments in the UK, dating back to around 3000 BC, situated in a rural area near the village of Mottistone on the Isle of Wight, with intricate carvings of unknown meaning on its surface.
One of our favourite walks in the island with so many nearby trails. Lovely bit of history behind the Longstone to boot!
This stone is reached from NT Mottistone Gardens and the climb can be confusing depending on the route you take, from the house or car park. Many paths and that are not well marked but worth it in the end. Warning if using Google map, there is a perfectly good road from the Military road A3055 to the house and car park but Google map will take you down miles of single track roads with no pull overs so be warned.
A peaceful place with a warm and magical energy to it. Visiting The Longstone really helps you to connect to nature and the earth. Rest a while here, take in the superb views and bathe in the good energy. There are plenty of free car parks surrounding the approach to this sublime stone. It also happens to be the island's only megalithic monument. If you're looking for a good walking track you'll find many trails in all directions from the monument.
Good that the NT looks after such historic relics, and perhaps a bit better because it is free. Nice to find out that there is a legend to go with this 6000 yr old Barrow stone that marked a burial site: apparently the Devil and St. Catherine had a wager to see who could rule the IOW, St. Catherine apparently won, throwing the larger stone a few feet further than the Devil's smaller foot stone.
One of my favourite walks...hidden away on a tiny plateau you wouldn't know it was there if you didn't know...walk affords amazing sea views of the Islands South Coast and West Wight.
Really easy walks up to the longstone and fantastic views across the island if you have a wander around,
