Macallan truly lives up to the tag of being the most modern distillery in Scotland. The modern architecture is truly amazing - the distillery is practically invisible from a distance you struggle to locate it. Once you're inside though, you're truly mesmerized. This is an ultra modern distillery compared to the others we've seen and it does show their commitment to creating a world class product. The tours tend to be a bit scripted with lot of demos that you would otherwise not see in other distilleries. The bar & restaurant are well stocked and you must stop by for a drink & a bite if you can.
The estate was beautiful. 2-3 months ahead to book a slot. The bar had a number of flighting option. Tough if you're bringing kids to the location - mine were teens so they had to stay back in the car. The store doesn't have much good deals or stock availability.
Last minute decision whilst in the area to come and see the distillery. Phoned to book late lunch on the day - please note you have to book an experience - don't just turn up!! Had no expectations and we were blown away by it all. Fabulous taster lunch (amazing value too for the standard of food!) and thank you to Laura who answered our millions of questions about the architecture and history of the building with such knowledge. Everyone who works here is absolutely delightful and couldn't be more helpful. Also thank you to Callum who talked us novices through the whisky making process and showed us the stills. A truly memorable afternoon in a fabulous setting. Even if you don't like whisky, go here for the experience - it's a brilliant place
#1 Distillery, total exclusivity to some very special bottles and wow factor in every way shape and form from the wonderful location , buildings , welcome , service and all round hospitality. Will for sure return very soon to explore the tasting experiences without the car next time.
If you already like Macallan the experience of visiting the bar and taking part in an experience will feel amazing as you may have a chance to drink whisky that you haven't before especially with the curated collection. You can drink a lot of Macallans that you wouldn't find elsewhere. The estate itself is worth the drive and the views are a good snapshot of highlands. Gemma our ambassador was very knowledgeable about the brand and how things are done the Macallan way. The shop has a lot of options but of course prices are limitless :)
Modern distillery with an elegant architecture but I missed the feeling of a distillery visit. It seemed like a fancy boutique for tourists. You are offered tea/coffee on arrival. The whiskey tasting includes drams of 12, 15 & 18 year old each. There was another one at the end from one of their special travel edition, although definitely matured less than 10 years in cask. The process was explained clearly although if you ask a question out of syllabus/notes, the guy fumbled. We did taste whiskey before it goes into the barrel (63% ABV) I wish they would have let us taste from the barrels rather than from bottles in the bar. The brand is a historic one but the new directions seem to focus on marketing and collaboration with designers etc etc. We drove 3+ hours from Edinburgh and went back in the evening. The views were great though with snow covered mountains.
