For the latest information on the museum please visit the museum's own website. Thank you. The Munnings Art Museum is at Castle House, the former home of the artist Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) and his wife, Violet. Described by Munnings as 'the house of my dreams', he lived and worked in this elegant Tudor and Georgian building for over forty years until his death in 1959. The House, garden and artist's studio are set in forty acres of beautiful countryside in the Dedham Vale on the borders of Suffolk and Essex. The museum owns the largest collection of art works by this prolific East Anglian painter and former President of the Royal Academy (1944-1949) and presents annual changing exhibitions.
I wonder if it's because it's based in his house, but this is a wonderful museum...which seems the wrong word somehow. Collection? Yes, Archive, yes but more. The plaques describing individual paintings ( and there are many!), are so informative along with information plaques giving historical/biographical context. A relaxed, informative, and welcoming place. Staff were wonderful, cafe lovely, his studio interesting too. If you like Munnings art in any way, just go!
Went to the Garden cafe in the grounds. Very peaceful setting and had a nice ploughman's and vegetarian platter each followed by a very nice cake. Lovely place to pit stop if you are walking around the Dedham countryside too.
As an artist, the Munnings museum is a place I have wanted to visit for a long time. Well worth it, beautiful artwork, the man was a genius. The museum is set in beautiful grounds and has a tea shop where one can enjoy a delicious sandwich or homemade cake. Definitely recommend a visit.
Only visited cafe that was in a nice location looking up a Vale with horses. They didn't know what matcha was, and they were busy with two ladies working who said they hadn't had a break and a friendly gentleman. I took back the finished tray without any acknowledgement, which was disappointing when they acknowledged others who followed my lead... Very odd indeed
Lovely setting, however the two ladies who work in the cafe ruined our visit with their rude and unwelcoming manner! Absolutely shocking never experienced such an dismissive attitude towards people with children!
The staff were very helpful and informative, it was a lovely quiet place to spend a Sunday!
