This 18th-century townhouse museum showcases the history and heritage of Newton Stewart and the surrounding Machars area. The museum features exhibits on the town's industrial and social past, including its role in the Scottish textile industry, as well as displays on the natural history of the region, including its geology, flora, and fauna.
A great place to spend a couple of hours. Well signed off the High Street. Walk into the reused old church and open a Pandora's box of historical artifacts covering hundreds of years. For the price of a beer(PS3) you can compare all the tools of workmen past. Military memorabilia some local and some from as far away as the Crimean war. Household paraphernalia, local photographs . Medical instruments, children's toys the list is endless. A friendly welcome from knowledgeable volunteers. Well done. Its a treasure.
We considered the PS3 entry fee well worth it, for access to one of the best but weirdest little town museum that we have ever visited. Based around donations from local people, it has an eclectic mix of exhibits, ranging from stone age hand axes through to late 20th century memorabilia. There is so much here that it is difficult to see it all, even though it is arranged into vaguely organised categories. Highlights were the agricultural and blacksmithing implements, the toys and the truly creepy funeral and mourning clothes.
Crazy little place full of all sorts. PS3 entry. Worth a look around. Staffed by lovely volunteers.
Nice collection of old farm implements. Building (old church) not open at time of visit unfortunately.
Such a fabulous museum jam packed with interesting things to see. It's run by volunteers and the entry fee is extremely reasonable. I would recommend a visit here.
Brilliant wee place. The ladies in the musuem were lovely and great to talk to. Very interesting and there's a fun quiz you can take around and guess what some of the numbered items are used for. Well worth a visit!
