The Priest House stands in a traditional cottage garden in the picturesque village of West Hoathly on the edge of Ashdown Forest. The house was owned in turn by Henry VIII, Thomas Cromwell, Anne of Cleves, Mary I and Elizabeth I. It is now furnished with 17th & 18th century country furniture and domestic objects collected by John Godwin-King, who gifted these and the house to the Sussex Archaeological Society. Over 170 culinary, medicinal & household herbs are planted in the garden. The resident curator gives fascinating tours of the house and garden upon request.
You probably won't want to spend more than an hour here but it is a really interesting house to visit. The Curator lives in part of the house and is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Fascinating history. Please note that you need to park about 200m away so may not be as accessible as you'd like if you have walking difficulties
A hidden gem....no there's not a cafe, but there is parking round the corner. The custodian "lives in" and nothing is too much trouble. He and his family were bought up in the village, and it appears that there is nothing he doesn't know about the place and its exhibits. A place that really deserves more visitors than it gets.
A real hidden gem of history. Small but worth a visit - the smell of the wood and the fabulous garden is so immersive. Amazing and Knowledgeable curator. A Glorious place!
