Open seasonally March-October. The Red House is the former home of composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) and his partner, the tenor Peter Pears (1910-1986). The collections left by the two men richly document their lives as performers and creators who made this place their home for nearly twenty years. As well as exploring Britten's music, visitors can explore the house, with its classic 1950s/60s interiors with a mix of formal and cosy and an eclectic range of books, art, and furniture. The large garden reflects their tastes in flowers and plants are for wandering around and enjoying the peace and quiet of this beautiful corner of Suffolk. There are also exhibitions, archive, a museum shop and cafe.
We visited today and booked on the Garden tour for 11:30. This was led by David the head gardener. He was absolutely brilliant. We had a wonderful time and come away feeling very inspired. This was down to his excellent knowledge and passion for gardening. A true asset and credit to the Red House. Please pass on our thanks to him. P.S Good luck with your Bamboo.
Absolutely great little museum with a fantastic collection of artworks hanging in the house, as well as a really interesting exhibit on Britten and Pears, plus access to the gardens and his composing studio. The museum staff were incredibly friendly and happy to have us and we even managed to get a tour of the upstairs bedrooms from a lovely guide who showed us all the amazing artworks and gave some background about the house. For me, the highlight of this place was definitely the paintings - so many great 20th century pieces collected by Britten and Pears. Well worth a visit.
Went with tenants that I support with learning disabilities, afternoon tea, absolutely amazing staff, very well organised, lovely food and a very very warm welcome. Well done Britten Pears arts. Beautiful setting, I am planning to return with my family to walk around the house and gardens.
Wonderful. The volunteers are well informed and friendly. The house itself is not over restored and feels very much like it's been left when they died. The pictures are an amazing collection. You must do the bedroom tour if possible. Everything here is looked after perfectly.
Whilst on holiday, went to Aldeburgh to see were Benjamin Britten lived. "The Red House", Unfortunately we arrived 15 minutes before closing time. It looks a most interesting place to visit and as we have booked Suffolk for 2024 it's on our to do list...
The volunteers and staff are excellent. The place is sublime, the art collection is too. Can't recommend this highly enough. Feels like you have just walked in while the residents have out for a walk.
