Waterfront collection of 3 submarines, science dsiplays and guided tours of HMS Alliance.
We really enjoyed our visit. I was a bit worried as we have a VERY lively 8 year old. But he took an interest in everything. I think my husband could have spent all day in the submarine looking at all the switches, wires and pipes. It was interesting what life would have been like living inside HMS Alliance. The volunteers were really knowledgeable and put the group at ease. We would definitely return.
Truly a day well spent, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum is fully loaded to entertain, intrigue & fascinate anyone of any age. To be able to take a guided tour of HMS Alliance was a real privilege, the guide on my tour was a submariner who was able to breathe life into that old submarine. HMS Alliance is a star for the museum but there are many gems to wander at here. The best advice I have is, if you can get the "ULTIMATE EXPLORER" ticket which will grant you access to a host of attractions at Portsmouth Harbour like HMS Victory, HMS Warrior & the Mary Rose. The Ultimate Explorer ticket allows you unlimited visits for a whole year. Great Great value
Museum included as part of the Navy Museum in Portsmouth. Is not as big or as long as the other exhibitions but it is quite unique, as not many museums let you visit the inside of a submarine. I would highly recommend checking the boat timings for reaching the facilities, as it is in the other shore where most of the parts of the museum are and going by boat is required. The boat trip is included in the ticket and the visit of the submarine takes around 15 to 30 minutes. Highly recommended.
Great trip, not all activities are suitable for disabled people unfortunately as the HMS Alliance is a tight squeeze and not wheel chair accessible. The rest of the exhibits are quite informative and plenty of smaller interactive activities for children. You can pay more to see other naval attractions in Portsmouth which is good for a full day out and they have a ferry onsite at specific times.
Make sure you get in the queue for the boat to get here early as there are a limited number you can get in one journey. Times are regular though if you miss the first one. I totally enjoyed my trip here. So much to look at. Lots of history. Very friendly staff. I've always wanted to visit here and it didn't disappoint. I recommend the walk around HMS alliance submarine. Like inside any submarine if you're tall mind your head. There are staff inside it to answer any of your questions. There is a cafe inside the main building to grab a drink while you're walking around. Prices are reasonable there. I'm going to give it a very well deserved 5 *
We spent about 3 and half hours on this attraction. The guided tour of the submarine. Thanks Jim and for all the questions you answered. Great that you described your experiences on board. Parking was for free and the two minute walk to the entrance was festooned with curiosities. The only thing was the water ferry was not going to Portsmouth. It doesn't run on school days.
