The Rum Story is CLOSED for the moment, but our Jefferson's Gift Shop is OPEN. The Rum Story was designed as a wet-weather attraction for the Georgian town of Whitehaven in the North West of England. This attraction depicts the history of Whitehaven and its links with the Caribbean, from where exotic spices, sugar cane and rum was brought in to the harbour to be traded throughout England. You will be taken back in time to an exotic tropical rainforest in the Caribbean and from there the great adventure of Whitehaven's Rum Story will be told.
A wonderful museum dedicated to Rum, the museum is wheelchair friendly and has accessible WC. There is a cafe and gift shop on site. Parking is on the main street. The museum is set off the high street, and it's the actual building that was used to make Jefferson's Rum. The building is old and has a lot of character. There are some areas that make us a bit claustrophobic, and it can get a bit warm and stuffy inside. There are a lot of reading materials giving insight into Whitehaven's dark rum history, which is quite fascinating and quite terrible at the same time. Don't forget to check out the gift store and also the main shop off the high street. The rum raisin chocolate fudge looks great with different selections of rum to buy and sample. It's worth a visit if you're in Whitehaven.
Last entry is at 3pm and place closes at 4pm. Lovely staff and must visit place if you interested to know and learn facts about rum making and history. Amazon forest theme was nice for photography. This place is on the high street and might require more money to run the place. It's kind of quiet and the profit are given to local harbour for development. They also have varieties of rum you can buy.
Bought some lovely chocolate rum from there. Great to be able to taste them first before buying. Didn't do the tour, maybe next time. Staff are lovely and friendly. It's definitely worth a visit.
What a fantastic place! Amazing museum for kids and parents - loads of immersive activities for the kids and so much education for the adults. Easily the best museum we have been to for a while!
Plenty of rum. Unfortunately, I had to drive, but they do takeaway rum in bottles.
We've visited two times (once before children and then with an 8 and 5 y/o) and it was just as interesting and informative the second time around. It's great to get a bit of history from the area and also how the whole story of rum travelled around the world. Well worth a visit.
