During 2024 we will be open for passengers on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 11.00 to 16.00 until the 29th September inc. SGLR is an 18"gauge railway on the trackbed of the standard gauge Killers Branch of the Cromford & High Peak Railway built to service Middleton quarry. There is also a 200M branch line into Steeplehouse quarry. We run through an SSSI & a nature reserve. The railway runs a variety of electric, diesel and petrol locomotives. These and the carriages all previously served time in coal mines, steel works, etc. We regret that at present we cannot accommodate wheelchairs in the carriages. Thursdays in summer are working days when visitors are still welcome to visit and look around
What a great little industrial railway and a really friendly welcoming group of volunteers with endless knowledge on the local area they even insisted i brought my motorcycle in the yard so it was safer. Well worth stopping by and a very fair entrance fee, glad to have finally seen the railway in action after passing it many times while on the High Peak Trail.
Great little light railway, very educational. I've been wanting to come here for a while. Lovely friendly staff. Dog friendly too
We had a wonderful afternoon. Really is for the whole family. The train rides were wonderful.we loved chatting to volunteer Robin about his rock/fossil collection. All the volunteers were lovely, attentive and so kind. Can't wait to visit again. Thank you for a wonderful trip. P.s Highly recommend the shortbread biscuits they were delicious.
A lovely little railway. Each ticket gets you 2 train rides. The first and longer ride goes from the train shed to Middleton and back along a line running through a tree lined cutting. On this journey, we had a young lad as guard on the train named Benjamin, who really knew his stuff. Gave us a great chat about the railway and its history. Very interesting. All the staff/volunteers were very friendly and funny and made the visit great. The second ride was much shorter and just went into the nearby quarry. There was a geologist who told us about about the rocks and fossils found in the quarry which was very interesting.
Fantastic afternoon visit. Our 3 yr old loved it. All the volunteers were very kind and friendly. I was shocked to see the 1 star review they had, but after a little digging, I found that whoever posted it generally doesn't like anything. I would 100% recommend this, and we will be back.
Great visit to this lovely little railway. A longer journey than expected and really impressed by the enthusiasm of the staff, especially the youngsters part way up the track with their WiFi controlled model trains. Hope to come back when the weather's better.
