The Story of Emily is a fresh, immersive historical experience that brings to life the incredible story of Emily Hobhouse. A tale of incredible bravery, determination and impact, we shine the light on an inspirational woman from Cornwall who challenged the social norms of the Victorian era and changed the lives of thousands of women and children. Leave behind the present and step into the late 19th to early 20th century. Here, an untold chapter of UK history is brought to life.
Spent a wonderful day being educated, challenged, looked after and entertained in equal measure. The immersive experience detailing the life of this local lass was staggeringly comprehensive with so much care put into the space and experience. The Story of Emily should be told in every classroom. To our shame, it is not. This day out is a must. Without adding spoilers, the tech is amazing!
What an amazing place! Everything has been thoroughly about and created to a high finish. The childhood home of Emily Hobhouse has been lovingly and faithfully restored and you can wander around freely. You swap your shoes for Victorian slippers (or wear shoe coverings), pop on an audio headset and away you go. Everything is rich, it's like stepping back in time. This alone is wonderful BUT the War Rooms is on a whole new level. I have never experienced anything like it. It's an immersive experience where you are guided through lots of immersive spaces, for example a South African verandah, a train carriage, a study... at each space the story plays out in front of you in a multimedia experience. You wear a headset (nothing covering your eyes, just headphones) and swap your shoes for South African boots. It's an amazing way to learn about the story and a truly unique experience. I learnt SO much. What an incredible true-story. There's also an amazing-looking restaurant onsite serving South African cuisine (as well as cakes and coffee). I originally thought the price was expensive, but o genuinely think it's a bargain for what you get-the experience is incredible. (Not for small children though)
Outstanding is an understatement this is an incredible museum to an incredible Cornish hero. The multimedia experience is like no other and you will learn some incredible history and eat some incredible food
Book online before this is a really unique experience to see a victoriana filled period house in the most authentic way possible. The attention to detail is fantastic. It's not like other places like national trust as there are no indicators you are in a 2024 setting, no lights, signs, info boards, ropes, health and safety signs, just a house as it would have been. Not sure it's that great for unwieldy kids, be a bit stressful I'd imagine. The buildings and the grounds and restaurant are all first class well done to all that have made it. (For transparency my partner Charlie, works here but this is still my unbiased review)
A fantastic step back into the past. A lot of time has been invested into the house and grounds. An amazing restaurant/cafe too. Serving authentic South African food.
Really enjoyed our visit to the Story of Emily , and incredibly detailed restoration / restaging of a Victorian home. The detail was amazing and accessibility was first class you genuinely felt you were on a person's home , unfortunately the the other exhibit of Emily life during the Boer war not currently open. The restaurant was both stunning in it's design and pleasant to have a mid morning break. Across the site the team running were helpful and informed, they showed a genuine passion for the "Story of Emily" and their customers. We will return
