This historic site is the location of one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in British history, where a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon ship burial was unearthed in 1939. The site features a fascinating museum showcasing the treasures found, including the iconic Sutton Hoo helmet, golden jewelry, and other artifacts that provide a glimpse into the lives of the Anglo-Saxon elite. Visitors can explore the site where the ship was buried, see reconstructions of the ship and its contents, and learn about the history and significance of the discovery through interactive exhibits and displays.
Well worth a visit. A unique boat with stunning history behind it. No charge for admission so I bought some of their hand-made items. Plenty of places to eat and drink nearby too.
Loved it, extremely dedicated volunteers doing an amazing job in trying to replicate the ship from Sutton Hoo burial site. I think they will succeed and hopefully see it sail in summer 2025. Free to enter but donations welcome and deserved.
Been watching the development of this and it's amazing! The work that's gone into it is incredible- free entry
The Sutton Hoo burial ship is an exciting Anglo Saxon discovery, The grave good of the a lost king are amazing enough but the project here is to use the careful excavations of the ship to reconstruct it. A full sized working replica using traditional methods and materials partly to reproduce the beauty of the vessel and partly to investigate how the Anglo-Saxons built their fleets of ships which could traverse the North Sea at will. A huge and impressive build that will pay repeated visits to see the ship slowly appearing.
Very interesting place, from the replica Saxon ship building to the displays upstairs. Staff are very knowledgeable and speak with passion. Must be amazing for school groups and pleased to see our rich heritage and history is still being respected.
We had a talk booked. Joe was our speaker he was excellent. Then everybody was given a guided tour of the boat. It was very interesting and the volunteers were great.
Good for kids
