As an ex-Airborne Soldier, I heard about the Round Canopy Re-enactment Club, and arranged to spend a couple of days with them at Upottery. I was even offered a chance to join in the parachute drop into the Carentan Penninsula, Normandy, France, as a guest of the Chief. In the event, poor weather curtailed this. They were willing to pay my ferry crossing and fare back to Devon. Great bunch.
Visited today and was shown around by Brian who was very knowledgeable and passionate. They've done a great job showing the history of the local area which most have no idea about! 100% worth a visit! Thank you Brian, hopefully speak soon when we plan to visit Dunkeswell.
Amazing place that isn't well known, but really should be. The amount of items they have on display is staggering - highly recommend. Staff are also very knowledgeable and very keen to help and chat.
A hidden gem of local interest. Never knew this was so close to home. The curator was a wealth of knowledge great time visiting.
What an incredible place!! Although small, I could have happily spent a good half day here. The volunteers are passionate, informative and really interesting. There are some brilliant, unique items on display such as a German good luck mascot and the wrekage from the heinkel it was on. A great mix of both American and British displays. Admission is free, relying on donations for upkeep. I would happily pay to see this.
Visited here on our weekend stay in Devon what a great find we had no idea this was there. We had previously been to the Dunkeswell Airfield Heritage Centre which was also very informative with friendly staff to talk to. They told us about the other museum so we went straight after to find it. Again lots to look at and the way it's set out gives you an idea of life back then. Watched videos about the history on both sites. Again very friendly informative staff. Definitely worth a visit.
