The Weaver's House provides a snapshot of life in medieval Coventry, where you can experience how John Croke, a narrow-loom weaver and his family would have lived and worked. The house has been restored to show how it looked in 1540, including a full size replica of a narrow-loom (please note access is via ladder). To the rear there is a garden showing plants that would have been grown for food, flavouring, medicine and household use. The house is only open on selected days throughout the spring and summer, or by prior arrangement. Admission is free on these Open Days, and refreshments are available. For pre-arranged visits at other times we ask for a suitable donation.
Really underrated living history space! The interpreters and guides are very knowledgeable and it's amazing seeing how 16th century weavers lived. Really educational too so if you've got nerdy kids definitely a good option. When they're open, absolutely go visit.
Fascinating history of a weaver and the poverty they experienced . Excellent knowledge shown by the guide . The house is well preserved and the garden typical of the day
We thought this was on medieval Spon street but actually its beyond Spon street under a subway and a short walk to get to. Thankfully at the far end of spon street was a sign indicating which was to go. Once we found the house (luckily had an A board outside) it was staffed with volunteers. A lovely little house with minimal alterations (only to make safe and accessible) it's a shame we are losing medieval Coventry to all manner of construction. A nice little herb garden at the back, with knowledgeable staff, its interesting to see a snippet of living conditions of a medieval weaver.
Beautiful building with a long, varied history staffed by passionate and enthusiastic volunteers. Faithfully recreated gardens and furnished interiors which give a rare insight into the history of the working people of this region over a number of generations. A real hidden gem set within Coventry's Spon End.
Amazing visit. Highly recommend. I was welcomed by a very knowledgeable young gentleman. Everyone there was so friendly and helpful. The tour of the house is well worth it! I learnt so much. Great tea and cake too.
Excellent place, full of history. Highly recommended.
