Hulking 15th-century stone towerhouse, built to accommodate hunting parties, in verdant surrounds.
You cant go in the building and theres not really much to it, just something to look at in passing, however its a nice area for walking and cycling.
Nice to see such a building still standing. It survived the creation of Thetford Forest and was in use until the 1930s. Old Warrener's lodge. Beautiful built.
This is quite an extraordinary place, rich in history and surrounded by an incredible forest. A great place to go for a long or short walk. I was here doing some research and a little performance. It is easy to get to and has a car park. The lodge itself is not accessible, though you can still see the inside through black metal bars. There is a legend that a large human size white rabbit guards the entrance of the doorway, with red flaming eyes. Popular with hikers and dog walkers.
This interesting English Heritage lodge was probably built about 1400 by the prior of Our Lady's Priory, Thetford as the home of the warrener. Free off road parking for about 20 cars and no site entrance fee. Is directly adjacent to the Thetford Golf Club. Access road and parking itself is riddled with potholes so take care. No toilets and no food/tea. Not wheelchair friendly. Great place for dog walkers BUT be aware there is more dog poo around than any other local site I have visited. Also, what's with hanging the dog poo bags on the trees - there is no dog poo fairy that makes them disappear :-( Direct access to Thetford forest. From this point the Beech walking route can accessed which is a 4.5 mile circular route and goes via High Lodge. Numerous smaller walking trails can be accessed from here. Warning: there is a tale told of a HUGE white rabbit with flaming red eyes who guards the doorway to the lodge. It is said to be an omen of death to anyone who lays eyes on it. There is something distinctly eerie about this place. A Thetford student named Herbert Thurston had weird dreams about the place, and his schoolteacher encouraged him to come and talk to the last lodge keeper who described what was said to be an encounter with a ghostly leper on the staircase, but I'd hazard a guess was actually a vivid dream interrupted by a steam train passing (this was 1904). Despite my cynicism I genuinely feel there is something uncanny about the place, an eerie atmosphere. I've been there at midnight and I've been there in broad daylight and the feeling was the same. There is a carpark about a quarter of a mile from the lodge but unfortunately last time we were there some dodgy looking people were looking in the cars. Our guy there at first thought they were doggers but noted they had their kids with them so probably sneak thieves. Once he appeared with two dogs they made off in their car sharpish. Probably worth being wary but I've never had any issues in Thetford.
Warren Lodge located near Thetford Golf club. The access track has a brown sign. There is small free car park on the track. The Lodge is located short walk from the car park. The Lodge is can be viewed only from outside as there is no access to interior. No toilet facilities.
Good for kids
