Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument and one of the world's most famous ancient wonders, is a circular setting of large stones, known as megaliths, surrounded by earthworks that form an ceremonial enclosure. The site consists of over 150 ancient stones, with the largest, known as the sarsens, weighing up to 50 tons and reaching heights of 30 feet. The smaller stones, known as the bluestones, weigh around 4 tons and are arranged in a pattern of concentric circles. The monument is believed to have been built in several stages between 3000 and 1500 BCE, with the largest stones brought from quarries over 150 miles away.
Not far inland from the A9 is are the remains of an it on age broch with an interesting name - "Things Va" The name of the site derives from the Norse Thing-vollr - a local assembly or law court. So not only was this place a huge iron age Broch surrounded by a large circular earthwork ditch but when the Norsemen came it was also used as a parliment!!! The Caithness broch project carried out community excvations in 2017 around the peripheral of the broch that revealed some possible evidence of buildings surrounding the broch itself.
A viking parliament on top of an iron age broch overlooking the quiet town of Thurso. It doesn't get more Caithnessian than this.
A short trip out of Thurso for those wanting an easy Broch hit.
I had no idea there was things like this just outside Thurso, why didn't we notice this before?
