A Museum and site dedicated to the mining and quarrying history of the Lake District. A narrow gauge railway with steam and diesel locos take people into the inner workings of the Quarry.
Great site and well worth a visit, I have seen a lot of reviews mentioning rusting junk but they obviously don't know what they are looking at, it's many years of mining history with lots of machinery to see, they are rusty but it adds a natural charm rather than being pristine and pays homage to the very hard lives the machinery has been through. The entry fee is great value and helps to support hidden gems like this.
Our family really enjoyed our afternoon here. Fun train ride and a good level of education for the adults! All the machines were also fun to see! (They even run them on special days, worth checking the website for.) And you can even do some gold hunting for PS4 into the stream.
Had so much fun here. It's small and not busy even on a may bank holiday. We got there early, and no one else around, did some panning, which was designed for children but was so much fun, bring your wellies. We then went on the steam train and had a basic talk on the workings of a steam engine by the engine driver who was very enthusiastic and knew his stuff. The museum was interesting and informative and the lady working in the shop was lovely. Have to say it was designed for children but really had fun here.
Always love visiting here!!! The highlight of the visit is the panning for gem stones!! The train ride is great, and the guys that volunteer there are enthusiastic and very informative! Lots of information in the mini indoor museum. A great few hours spent!
Excellent day out for children & families with plenty of interest for adults. Small steam train around the quarry & panning for minerals/gems in the stream (PS4 ea), the highlight of our visit! Small geology museum with good display of rocks/minerals. Plenty of parking, toilets, can get muddy when wet, take wellies or towel for paddling in stream. Adults PS9, children PS5
Not great weather for walking so decided to visit here. Only PS9 entry which included a trip on a steam train. Loads of interesting exhibits. 2 men on the train were lovely and gave loads of information about the quarry. Lots of old machinery to look at.
