The Hull tidal tower and barrier were built to prevent the Old Town from flooding. Something that was common during the 1950s and 60s. The giant gate is swung. Down to stop the river humber Causing the river Hull to overtop its banks. During the great storm, serge of 2013 The river hull came within 40 cm of topping the barrier, but it did its job and saved the Old Town from serious flooding. Groups used to be allowed inside the barrier and the view from the top is quite spectacular. The staff used to grow tomato plants along the glass covered walkway at the top as it is like a giant greenhouse.
